What is
a dental Crown?

A dental crown is a restoration that encircles all of your tooth when there has been extensive loss of tooth structure most often caused by a large cavity, trauma, or wear. A dental crown can help improve the strength and esthetics of a tooth.

A filling may be adequate to remove the decay or dental disease of a tooth but when a filling involves more than two thirds of a tooth it is at a higher risk of fracturing.  A crown is often recommended to reduce the risk of your tooth fracturing and improve the long term prognosis.  A crown helps your tooth stand up to the forces of our bite!

CAN I STIL GET A CAVITY ON MY TOOTH AFTER I HAVE HAD A CROWN PLACED?

Yes.  That is why it is so important to brush and floss your teeth regularly even after getting a crown.  A crown has a margin that meets the tooth, usually close to your gum line.  Where the crown meets the tooth is where a new cavity can start if it is not cleaned properly.  Be sure to ask us at your next appointment to show you how to clean around your crowns aquequetly.
